General Congregation Meeting (GCM): Thank you for your participation in our first ever GCM by Zoom. We had a great turnout and great interaction as we voted to expand our benevolence policy to better minister to our community outside of church during the COVID19 crisis.

Specifically, the membership passed by majority two proposals from the leaderships in regards to the use of the Benevolent Fund:

1) To set aside $40K and the Benevolent offerings collected between 4/26- 5/24 for the use of ministering to the Oakland Chinatown community during the COVID-19 crisis; and

2) To expand the availability and use of the Benevolent Fund to cover not just illness or the needs of CIBC members, but to include all identified needs within our community.

Pray for the COVID-19 Community Task Force as they establish guidelines and identify those in need. Pray also that as we reach out to the community there will be opportunities to share Christ.

Week of March 29th, 2020

We are into the third week of the Shelter In Place mandate and I am impressed and am blown away by all the creative ways the church family has found to connect with each other and the fervency to do so. With school shutdowns extended to May 1st, we are learning to share with one another’s pains.

Currently, we have several prayer groups, small groups, and youth fellowship meetings that are being conducted on the internet. If you would like to receive information, please contact me and I will connect you with the right person(s).

Several parents have asked if there are any resources we can provide to help them spiritually nourish their children. Pastor Tim, on his Youth Ministry update, provides a link to this very helpful article:

I wanted to share a great article with you: <https://www.christianitytoday.com/edstetzer/2020/march/family-worship-during-covid-19.html>

Using the acronym F.A.M.I.L.Y., this is a great guide to leading family worship time. I hope you find it helpful!

In April, we will be navigating through uncharted territories: conducting a Good Friday service (April 10th) online and celebrating the resurrection on Easter Sunday, also online.

Finally, Scripture does mention a form of “Shelter In Place” with Paul’s imprisonment in Rome. Paul tells Timothy that though he is in chains, God’s Word is not (2 Timothy 2:9). That is, he did not allow his physical limitations prevent him from ministering to others with God’s Word. My prayer is that as the scattered CIBC church, we will use this great opportunity to reach out to others with a word of encouragement from God’s word- perhaps a shut-in, a neighbor, a friend or family that we have not connected with in a while. Who knows? Our words may bring a lost one a step closer to knowing Christ, encourage a down-hearted soul, or sharpen another’s spiritual iron.

Grace & Blessings,

Pastor Philip

March 20, 2020

Hello Church Family,

We are four days into the mandated shelter in place order, we pray you all are doing well.  We wanted to give you a quick update on what CIBC has done in those four short days. With the shelter in place, the church office has closed and we have discontinued all in person fellowship groups.  The staff is working remotely and is still responding to emails.  We are encouraging fellowships and prayer groups to meet using other methods like Zoom video conferencing or telephone conferencing.

The leadership has formed a smaller response team who will work on ways to help you all communicate and fellowship with each other while sheltering in place.  They will help groups set up communication lines and is working on plans to ensure all of our brothers and sisters are being cared for.

All Sunday worship services will now be online.  We realize that last week, there were many technical difficulties, so this week, the Cantonese and English worship services have been pre recorded so the audio and video will be much better.  The Mandarin will use Zoom and Youtube live on Sunday to broadcast their service.  So, please plan to join the English Worship service at 9:30 am and the Cantonese and Mandarin services at 11:00 am.

If you have any concerns or are aware of any needs, please contact one of your congregation’s Pastors or Deacons.

Updated information can also be listened to on the church’s information line: 1(510) 452-5467.

Please be in prayer for each other as we all adjust to these drastic changes. If you have any immediate and urgent non-medical needs, please contact:

Pastor Philip Gee (English): (510) 908-1205

Pastor Patrick Lai (Cantonese): (510) 415-7763

Pastor Larry Wong (Mandarin): (510) 780-6052

March 17th, 2020

During this three-week period, we are asking our members to be in full compliance to the order. We do this not just to protect ourselves and our families, but to show love to our communities, and to obey our God-appointed government authorities. The church office will also be closed during this time.

In addition to the cancellation of in-person fellowships and worship gatherings, we are asking small groups and prayer groups not to meet in-person at all, and to use video conferencing apps such as Zoom, Google Hangouts, WhatsApp, WeChat, etc.and others to host meetings virtually.

On next three Sundays (3/22, 3/29, 4/5), we will be providing recorded worship services in all three languages accessible through the CIBC website (please click the “Live Stream” button).

For ministry, small group, and prayer group leaders, here are some initial guidelines:

  1. Make sure you have up-to-date contact info for your members and can easily contact them. Consider creating a group through WhatsApp, WeChat, or other chat applications for your members.

  2. Make sure you familiarize yourself with at least one of the video conferencing options listed above (Zoom, Google Hangouts are free for general use).

  3. For groups with elderly members, members with compromised immune systems, or other high-risk groups, please reach out to see if there are any particular needs or difficulties with getting groceries or other day-to-day tasks that the healthy members can help with.

  4. For groups with members who struggle with technology, please explore other ways to meet and communicate, such as phone calls or conference calls.

As you have all undoubtedly heard, effective 12 am this morning, we are all under the shelter-in-place order placed by six counties in the Bay Area, including Alameda and Contra Costa. You can find the exact details here: http://www.acphd.org/2019-ncov.aspx.

Please be in prayer for each other as we all adjust to these drastic changes. If you have any immediate and urgent non-medical needs, please contact:

Pastor Patrick Lai (Cantonese): (510) 415-7763

March 15th, 2020

In these times of panic and fear, it is important for us to remember our calling as children of God, followers of Jesus, and ambassadors of God’s love to the world. It is with the goals of caring for our church family, loving our community, and obeying our government that the pastors and deacons have drafted a plan in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Below is a short summary of our discussion for the two remaining Sundays in March (22nd, 29th). The Pastors and Deacons will reassess the situation after this Sunday to determine longer term plans on what to do for April.

Sunday Worship (March 22nd, 29th)

  • The English and Cantonese worship services will be pre-recording the worship services and sermons for our members to view from home. The videos will be on YouTube and made available for viewing on Sunday mornings. The link will be available on our website (look for the “Livestream” button). All other Sunday ministries: Sunday school, children’s church, nursery, will be cancelled or changed the online format.

  • The Mandarin Services will use Zoom to live stream the service at 11:00am only. The 9:30am service is canceled. Church family should stay home. The Zoom meeting ID will be published through the church website. Sunday school is also canceled.

Fellowship Groups

No fellowships will meet at church. All groups are encouraged to break into smaller groups (no more than 10 people) and meet in individual homes. Group leaders and sponsors can make decisions on how to best divide their groups and where to meet.

Youth groups & Fellowships

English and Cantonese- Pastors and sponsors will determine how to best divide and relocate our groups.

Prayer meetings

Continue meeting at homes. Bill Lau will continue to lead the weekday prayer group at church.

Pastor Joseph’s Bible study will start going online on Tuesday 3/17

Offerings

Care and Community

These changes are not just a change in size and location. They will require all of us to change our thinking and step up to BE the church, now that we can’t be AT church. We will need to be prayerful and creative to keep connected with one another and make sure no one is left isolated. Call each other, pray for each other, invite each other over to watch the service on Sunday (but no more than 10 people!), reach out to your friends and neighbors who may be isolated and scared. Let’s use this time of fear and panic to let the light of the gospel shine.

Sincerely,

CIBC Leadership
