Week of October 18, 2020

Church Updates

CIBC Cantonese On-line Worship: Starting in November 1st, CIBC Cantonese on-line worship will be live-streamed at two specific times. The first live-stream worship will be from 8am-9:20am. The second recorded live-stream service will be from 11am-12:20pm. Our Cantonese congregation will join our Sunday worship at one of these specific times. However, beside these two live-streamed worship times, the worship service recorded on Sunday will not be available for viewing on the church website until the next day. This new arrangement is the first phase of preparing to reopen the church for in-house worship services at 8am and 11am.  Even though the pastors will lead and preach in the worship services at church every Sunday morning starting in November, the church is not open for worship to our congregation on Sunday. The church building will remain close on Sunday. When all preparations to comply with health regulations and orders are completed, we will advise the congregation of how all of us can safely return to church for worship. The worship teams will continue to lead our worships through pre-recorded worship segments. When a plan and technical support is available, the church will invite the worship teams to lead the worship at church on Sunday.

All Church Thanksgiving: Please mark your calendars for Sunday, November 22nd at 7:00PM.  We will be having an online All Church Thanksgiving Program.  The link will be posted to the CIBC website.  Our special guests will be Sarah and Kenny sharing from Southern California as well as special music in English and Chinese.  We would like to create a photo and video montage (collection) with photos and videos from you sharing what you are thankful for.  Please either take a family photo and let us know in the email what you are thankful for or you can do a short video (no more than 1 minute) and say what your family is thankful for.  Please email your photos or videos to cibcphotos@gmail.com by Nov 13th.  Questions can also be sent to that email address.

General Congregation Meeting (GCM) on 11/15:  There will be a GCM (General Congregational Meeting) on Sunday, November 15 from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM via Zoom.  Links to the meeting will be posted on the church website.

The agenda will include:

1.   2021 Church Council Election

2.   2021 Budget Proposal

3.   COVID-19 Community Care Team (CCC) & Benevolent Fund update

4.   Finance year-to-date update

CIBC Reopening Plans: Please continue to pray for the leadership as they determine the proper timeline for reopening CIBC for Sunday Morning Worship services. Both live-stream only worship and in-person worship are being considered, with live-streaming only being our immediate focus. Here are some criteria that need to be met:

  • Having enough willing volunteers to ensure safe, sustainable, and efficient running of worship services and sanitizing the church afterward

  • Ensuring we have the proper technical capabilities, manpower, and training to live-stream for all 3 congregations consistently

  • Ensuring all pastors, leaders, and volunteers know and will abide by the established stringent health and safety protocols

  • Ensuring we have the capability to effectively communicate with all three congregations

  • Ensuring we are able to provide contact tracing in the event of an infection

Important Health Update

A Reminder—What You Can Do: In light of the recent resurgence of Coronavirus, What you can do to reduce your risk?

Experts’ understanding of how the Covid-19 works is growing. It seems that there are four factors that most likely play a role: how close you get to an infected person; how long you are near that person; whether that person expels viral droplets on or near you; and how much you touch your face afterwards. You can help reduce your risk and do your part to protect others by following some basic steps:

- Keep your distance from others. Stay at least six feet away from people outside your household as much as possible.

- Wash your hands often. Anytime you come in contact with a surface outside your home, scrub with soap for at least 20 seconds, rinse and then dry your hands with a clean towel.

- Avoid touching your face. The virus primarily spreads when contaminated hands touch our nose or mouth or eyes. Try to keep your hands away from your face unless you have just recently washed them.

- Wear a mask outside your home. A mask protects others from any potential infection from you. The more people who wear masks, the more we all stay safer.

March 17th, 2020

During this three-week period, we are asking our members to be in full compliance to the order. We do this not just to protect ourselves and our families, but to show love to our communities, and to obey our God-appointed government authorities. The church office will also be closed during this time.

In addition to the cancellation of in-person fellowships and worship gatherings, we are asking small groups and prayer groups not to meet in-person at all, and to use video conferencing apps such as Zoom, Google Hangouts, WhatsApp, WeChat, etc.and others to host meetings virtually.

On next three Sundays (3/22, 3/29, 4/5), we will be providing recorded worship services in all three languages accessible through the CIBC website (please click the “Live Stream” button).

For ministry, small group, and prayer group leaders, here are some initial guidelines:

  1. Make sure you have up-to-date contact info for your members and can easily contact them. Consider creating a group through WhatsApp, WeChat, or other chat applications for your members.

  2. Make sure you familiarize yourself with at least one of the video conferencing options listed above (Zoom, Google Hangouts are free for general use).

  3. For groups with elderly members, members with compromised immune systems, or other high-risk groups, please reach out to see if there are any particular needs or difficulties with getting groceries or other day-to-day tasks that the healthy members can help with.

  4. For groups with members who struggle with technology, please explore other ways to meet and communicate, such as phone calls or conference calls.

As you have all undoubtedly heard, effective 12 am this morning, we are all under the shelter-in-place order placed by six counties in the Bay Area, including Alameda and Contra Costa. You can find the exact details here: http://www.acphd.org/2019-ncov.aspx.

Please be in prayer for each other as we all adjust to these drastic changes. If you have any immediate and urgent non-medical needs, please contact:

Pastor Patrick Lai (Cantonese): (510) 415-7763

March 15th, 2020

In these times of panic and fear, it is important for us to remember our calling as children of God, followers of Jesus, and ambassadors of God’s love to the world. It is with the goals of caring for our church family, loving our community, and obeying our government that the pastors and deacons have drafted a plan in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Below is a short summary of our discussion for the two remaining Sundays in March (22nd, 29th). The Pastors and Deacons will reassess the situation after this Sunday to determine longer term plans on what to do for April.

Sunday Worship (March 22nd, 29th)

  • The English and Cantonese worship services will be pre-recording the worship services and sermons for our members to view from home. The videos will be on YouTube and made available for viewing on Sunday mornings. The link will be available on our website (look for the “Livestream” button). All other Sunday ministries: Sunday school, children’s church, nursery, will be cancelled or changed the online format.

  • The Mandarin Services will use Zoom to live stream the service at 11:00am only. The 9:30am service is canceled. Church family should stay home. The Zoom meeting ID will be published through the church website. Sunday school is also canceled.

Fellowship Groups

No fellowships will meet at church. All groups are encouraged to break into smaller groups (no more than 10 people) and meet in individual homes. Group leaders and sponsors can make decisions on how to best divide their groups and where to meet.

Youth groups & Fellowships

English and Cantonese- Pastors and sponsors will determine how to best divide and relocate our groups.

Prayer meetings

Continue meeting at homes. Bill Lau will continue to lead the weekday prayer group at church.

Pastor Joseph’s Bible study will start going online on Tuesday 3/17

Offerings

Care and Community

These changes are not just a change in size and location. They will require all of us to change our thinking and step up to BE the church, now that we can’t be AT church. We will need to be prayerful and creative to keep connected with one another and make sure no one is left isolated. Call each other, pray for each other, invite each other over to watch the service on Sunday (but no more than 10 people!), reach out to your friends and neighbors who may be isolated and scared. Let’s use this time of fear and panic to let the light of the gospel shine.

Sincerely,

CIBC Leadership
