Reverend Larry Wong, Lead Pastor and Cantonese Congregation Pastor
Pastor Larry Wong was born in Hong Kong and went to Canada for his undergraduate study. He received his B.Sc. in physics from the University of Toronto and then pursued his graduate degrees in particle physics in Ottawa. After graduation he conducted electrical engineering research for Bell-Northern Research. Sensing God’s calling for full-time ministry, he moved to Dallas together with his family in 1993 to begin his seminary training at the Dallas Theological Seminary.
After receiving his Master of Theology, he served at the Dallas Chinese Bible Church and then came to the Bay Area to serve at the Sunset Chinese Baptist Church. He engaged in a church planting mission in the mid-peninsula area for two years before coming to serve at CIBC.
Pastor Larry has been happily married to Mary and has two daughters, Evangeline and Pauline. He loves to study particle physics and cosmology in his leisure time (yes, it is a weird hobby!)
Pastor Luke Xie; Mandarin Congregation Assistant Pastor
Pastor Luke was born and raised in Guangdong, China and established a career as a university biology professor. He heard the Gospel, repented, and trusted in Jesus Christ as his Savior in 1995. He became fervent in preaching the Gospel and leading the local congregation. He was called to full-time ministry in 1998 after the sign of the Lord’s calling was made known and through the compelling love of Christ. Later, he went to California for his seminary education in 2007. Pastor Luke graduated in 2010 from Christian Witness Theological Seminary with a Master of Divinity. He served as an Intern at the Contra Costa Gospel Church and Southbay Chinese Baptist Church. Pastor Luke began serving as an Assistant Pastor of the Mandarin Congregation at CIBC after his graduation. Pastor Luke and his wife, Abby have two kids: a daughter named Grace and a son named Samuel. He enjoys physical running and reading books.
Reverend Jerry Wong, Young Adult and College Pastor
Reverend Jerry and his wife, Wenna have three active and fun boys named Ryan, Josh and Tyler. He is grateful to serve at CIBC as a Youth Pastor and loves ministering to students. God called Pastor Jerry to serve at CIBC in 1991 for three years as a Youth Intern/Pastor. God then called him to Southern California where he served as an Associate Pastor to the English ministry in a Chinese church. In 1997, God called Pastor Jerry back to CI as a Youth Pastor.
Pastor Jerry graduated in 1991 from Dallas Theological Seminary with a ThM in Bible Exposition and in 1997 from Talbot Theological Seminary with a MA in Theology. He is a member of Grace Evangelical Society and is passionate in preaching a Free Grace gospel message.
In addition to Pastor Jerry’s ministries at church, he particularly enjoys evangelism, Short term missions, and discipleship. For refreshment, he enjoys playing with the kids, going out with his wife, and playing sports.
Reverend David Tong; Cantonese Youth Pastor
Pastor David was born in Hong Kong and attended a Christian school at an early age. In 1976, his family immigrated to the United States and began to attend Oakland Chinese Independent Baptist Church. By God’s grace, he trusted the Lord and was baptized at CIBC. Before David graduated from high school, at a Missions Conference, he dedicated himself to God’s calling to full time ministry and began preparing himself to answer this call.
In 1983, upon graduating with a B.S. degree, David began his career as a system software engineer. Then in 1993, he started his family with his wife Betty and the Lord graciously gave them two sons: David Junior and Jonathan. In 1996, David took further step to answer God’s calling for full time ministry. He concluded his career in system software engineering and David and his family moved to Texas for seminary training at Dallas Theology Seminary. The blessings of God continued, and the Lord gave them daughter Samantha in Texas.
Pastor David graduated from DTS with a Masters of Theology degree in 2001 and returned to the Bay Area to serve at Central Chinese Christian Church of Castro Valley. In 2003, Pastor David accepted Oakland CI’s invitation to pastor at his mother church and has served in the Cantonese college, youth and children ministries since. Pastor David is honored and privileged to serve the Lord through serving the many young people and their families.
Pastor Paul Kwok; English Youth Pastor
Pastor Paul was born in Hong Kong and raised in the Bay Area. He came to faith in Christ in 2000 at CIBC. There he was baptized and discipled, and also had opportunities to serve in different ministries.
Pastor Paul was a bank manager before he was called to full-time ministry in 2001. Later, he and his wife, Wendy moved to Portland, Oregon for seminary training. Pastor Paul graduated in 2008 from Multnomah Biblical Seminary with a Master of Arts in Pastoral Studies with a Family Ministry emphasis. He is passionate in helping young people pursue an intimate relationship with Jesus Christ.
